2009 William Spivey, MD, FACEP, Research Presentation Awards
Jestin Carlson, MD, received the first prize for the best platform presentation at the 2009 PaACEP Scientific Assembly. His presentation was entitled: “How Much Force is Required to Dislodge an Alternate Airway?” The second place platform prize winner was Matthew Messa, DO. His presentation was entitled: “Comparison of Bougie-Assisted Intubation Versus Traditional Intubation in a Simulated Difficult Airway.” In the poster category, Meidad Goldman, MD, won the first prize for his poster, “Noninvasive Prehospital Carbon Monoxide Screening: Identifying Unrecognized Victims.” Rebecca Jeanmonod, MD, won second prize for her poster entitled, “You Hit Like a Girl: Punch Injuries in Men and Women."

Eleven scientific papers and posters were presented at this year’s Scientific Assembly.
In 1993, the PaACEP Board of Directors named the PaACEP Scientific Assembly Poster/Paper competition in memory of William H. Spivey, MD, FACEP, to recognize his outstanding contribution as a teacher, researcher and clinician. He died on February 20, 1993. Dr. Spivey was internationally known for his research in emergency medicine. He was also a gifted educator who enjoyed teaching residents and medical students and never refused to share his research expertise. In his 39 short years, Dr. Spivey received numerous awards for his research work, including the ACEP Research Scholar Award in 1985; the Best Speaker Award at the 1989 Annual Meeting of the American College of Clinical Pharmacologists; the Best Oral Presentation Award at the PaACEP Scientific Assembly in 1990; and the ACEP National Leadership Award in Research in 1992. Dr. Spivey also published more than 40 medical papers and was a contributing author to more than a dozen book chapters on emergency medicine. At his death, Dr. Spivey was fellowship director at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and chief of the emergency department's division of research. He also served as assistant director of clinical research with Sterling-Winthrop Pharmaceuticals in Collegeville, Montgomery County.

The William H. Spivey MD, FACEP, Research Competition is held during the Annual Scientific Assembly each spring. Emergency physicians, residents, fellows and medical students are encouraged to submit abstracts that address issues pertinent to emergency medicine. Original research and case series will be accepted. Watch this website for the 2010 call for submissions.
