2010 Spivey / CPC Call for Submissions

The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (PaACEP) announces “The William H. Spivey, MD, FACEP, Research Presentation Competition” to be held in conjunction with the PaACEP Annual Scientific Assembly, April 14-16 at the Radisson Valley Forge in Valley Forge, PA.

DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS: MUST BE POST-MARKED BY FEBRUARY 5, 2010

·   Abstracts will be considered by a review panel for platform or poster presentation.  Authors are asked to indicate a preference for presentation format, with the final decision made by a review panel.  There will be only six (6) platform abstract presentations--Three clinical and three basic science.  Platform presentations will be limited to 10 minutes, with an additional five minutes for discussion and will be presented at the 2010 PaACEP Scientific Assembly.  Abstracts requested to be presented orally by the author but not chosen for platform presentation may be chosen for a poster presentation.  All other clinical and basic science abstracts will be considered for poster presentation.  Posters will be displayed at the Scientific Assembly and must be accompanied by one of the authors during the breakfast, morning break, lunch and afternoon breaks.

·   Presentation of the abstract at a previous national meeting will not disqualify that abstract from submission, but resultant manuscripts must not have been published prior to the presentation date.  Abstracts may be submitted on the SAEM abstract form.

·   Presentation of abstracts is open to emergency physicians, residents, fellows, and medical students, and should address issues pertinent to emergency medicine. The presenter must be one of the authors of the abstract, although others may have contributed to the research and presentation. Original research and case series will be accepted.

·   Cash awards will be given for best clinical platform presentation, best basic science platform presentation, best clinical poster presentation, and best basic science poster presentation, provided there are a sufficient number of basic science abstracts submitted. If NOT, 1st and 2nd place clinical research abstract awards will be given in both oral and poster presentation categories.   Award winners will be announced in the chapter’s newsletter, PaACEP News and at the PaACEP Annual Business Meeting during Scientific Assembly.

Abstract information must fit within the space provided on the submission form, and include introduction/hypothesis, methodology, results, and conclusions.  Tables may be included and may be single-spaced.  Use generic names for drugs and devices, and standard abbreviations. Do not include illustrations, figures, references, authors, institutions, or funding sources.

To submit an abstract, complete an online submission form.  You must complete all three pages.  If you have any questions or problems, please contact MaryTherese Gallagher at mgallagher@pamedsoc.org. Submissions may also printed and faxed to (717) 558-7841 or mailed to PaACEP, 777 East Park Drive, PO Box 8820, Harrisburg, PA 17105-8820

CPC CALL FOR CASES

Submissions are now being accepted for the 2010 State Emergency Medicine Competition to be held at PaACEP Scientific Assembly in Valley Forge on April 14-16, 2010. This event has been a great success at the meeting each year and, like the national competition, is a great way to showcase your residency program at the state level. (There is also a greater chance of winning!). The program committee of the Scientific Assembly has allotted 2 hours for the competition. This gives your residents and faculty a chance to compete and present their great cases. As you can only submit one case to national at SAEM, this is an opportunity for your resident with the 2nd best case or for any EM-3’s wanting to compete in a CPC (SAEM is limiting competition to only EM-1’s and 2’s, because if they win, they go to ACEP in the fall, which would be after the EM-3’s graduate).
The guidelines for the state competition are essentially the same as those of the national CPC competition, with the following exceptions:
1. It’s free - no registration fee
2. I will need two copies of the case, one with the final diagnosis, the other without. Any pertinent copies of x-rays and EKG’s that you want the discussant to receive. They may be actual copies, and don’t need to be slides. A PowerPoint presentation on electronic media or emailed will be fine.
3. The name of the resident presenter and faculty discussants with contact information - phone and email are required.
4. It is not required that the case be on electronic media, although it’s easier if you submit in this fashion.
5. There will be an award for the best resident and faculty speakers to be presented at the chapter’s Annual Membership Luncheon on Friday, April 16. Winners do not need to be present to accept the prize.

The best cases are difficult, but "gettable" based on the information presented. They can and should represent unusual presentations of common or life-threatening diseases, or uncommonly encountered diagnoses.
The resident will have 5 - 8 minutes to present the case, the discussant 12 - 15 minutes to discuss his or her differential and final stab at the diagnosis and then the resident has a 5 minute didactic wrap-up. Scheduled presentation times will be based on the number of cases received. Cases will be presented on Thursday, April 15.
Cases must be received by February 5, 2010.
